Bottomless Pit
August 23, 2006

There is no bottomless pit here
There is nothing to exploit you
As you lie naked in front of truth
And you feel it consuming you.

You can never again be as miserable
And as sad as you are in this moment
It cannot kill you, it cannot banish you.
You are still here. You are still strong.

We can come together.
In lieu of this tragedy, in lieu of this hatred,
Grab my hand and hold it tightly,
This is our last goodbye, and I am here for you.

Do not be judgmental. Do not turn away,
Open up your mind, open up your soul
You’ll lie naked here in front of truth
And she will comfort you.

Do not feel that hate bubbling
There is no bottomless pit here,
There is only the truth
There is only your soul.

It will represent our spirit, it always will
And now that it’s gone, it cannot be forgotten,
When will you learn?
When will you learn?

There is no bottomless pit here,
There is only truth,
And as you lie naked before it,
Remember that it never dies.

Your tears are not wasted,
Do not be ashamed.
Grab my hand and hold it tightly,
With our palms pressed upwards.

Tip your head back,
There is no bottomless pit here,
Cry, cry if you must,
We are together.

As you lie naked in front of truth,
In lieu of this hatred, this tragedy,
Know that no one will harm you,
And you are safe.

It will all burn to hell,
It will all fall to hell,
And you will still be here,
Holding my hand tightly.

Do not turn away in fear,
This is genuine, this is truth,
This is what you are meant to do.

There is no bottomless pit here.

I watched Jon Stewart's speech about 9/11, and I was literally moved to tears as he bore his soul to Americans on National television. And it inspired me to write a poem.

It may not necessarily be about 9/11, it may just be about human tragedy as a whole.

Most of all, I feel that we did not learn our lesson. That should have been a time when we came together. A time when we did not judge one another on petty differences such as political standpoints, religion standpoints, and races. But we, as a country, seem to be more divided then ever before. Did we learn our lesson? When will the killing stop? When will the hatred stop?

When can a Republican and a Democrat love one another for being a human? When can a Christian love a Jew for being a human? When can an American not look at an Arab like a terrorist and instead regard him as a wonderful, free human being? When? Why does this still happen?

Have we learned anything at all?

I'm sorry for ranting. But it tears me apart that we cannot cross that bridge and come together as a country. Instead, we're being torn apart from the inside and the outside.

Why are humans cruel?
